Vilinius was named the European Capital of culture in 2009 and was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . Crossing over into Latvia as you pass the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania you go from one medieval city to another – Riga , the capital of Latvia . Riga was founded by the German bishop Albert in 1201 and is the largest city of the three Baltic capitals. Set on the Baltic Sea on the River Daugava , the city is known for its Wooden buildings and medieval old town with its kaleidoscope of baroque architecture. Discover medieval Latvia by exploring the stunning beauty of the Gauja National Park outside of Riga , listen to the legend of the Rose of Turaida , see the ruins of Episcopal Castle and castle of the Knights of the Sword. If you are a foodie , don't miss a Latvian dinner at the beachside resort of Jurmala .

The third and most well known of the Baltic Capitals is Tallinn . Tallin is a charming blend of medieval tranquillity and modern life. Entering the old town of Tallinn surrounded by the medieval city walls , you enter the gates of medieval times as you see the Toompea Castle , the Dome Church , Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Great Guild Hall . Lined with shops , souvenir shops and cafe's with staff attired in traditional clothing , you just get drawn into a different world . The ambience is happy which will bring a spring in your step and a smile on your face ! Finish off your Tallinn visit with a medieval Estonian dinner at some famed restaurants known for their unique medieval setting.
